Solar panels utilize the sun's UV energy and converts into electricity to use in your home or office. There are many considerations to think about before installing solar. This article will break down the good, the bad and the ugly of solar so you can make an informed decision on which solar set up works best for you.
THE GOOD
There are many benefits to solar panel installation. One of the greatest advantages is about taking control of your energy costs over time, learning how to manage it efficiently and ultimately reduce your power bills. It also gives the freedom of having less reliance on the grid by being more energy independent. In turn you are protected against rising electricity prices, as solar allows you lock in a portion of your power costs. Solar power is a renewable energy source that lowers your carbon footprint and continues to produce electricity, even in cloudy conditions. Solar performs well in Christchurch all year round. Once installed, solar systems are very low maintenance with minimal upkeep and add a lot value to your home as they have become a more attractive feature for home buyers.
THE BAD
Unfortunately there are some considerations with solar panel installation. Roof slope and roof orientation can impact production so installation is not optimal on all roofs. In the Southern hemisphere, ideally your roof would face North because this has the best average solar input. Slope or pitch matters too to have the most efficient output. Solar may appear expensive however whilst it requires an initial investment, it delivers long-term savings. By taking control of your solar power usage, you can significantly speed up your return on investment.
Any solar panels are better than no panels, and we at ZES are happy to assess your roof to determine the most effective positioning and layout to maximize your solar system.
THE UGLY
Solar installation quality matters so be sure to use quality products and ensure they are installed by an experienced electrician. Recently in New Zealand, the EWRB (Electrical Worker's Registration Board) have introduced an endorsement specifically for solar panel installation, recognizing the intricacies of this type of electrical work. Think of it similar to a driver's license where you have endorsements to operate a forklift or carry dangerous goods. Other ugly considerations with solar is the export rates in New Zealand are low compared with the input rate, this is why it is important to have a well-designed system so you can maximise what you use and not focus on selling it back. There is uncertainty in this area as buyback rates could change in the future, another reason to focus on using the electricity rather than selling.
There is also batteries to consider about which solar system will suits your lifestyle and needs best:
If you want to maximise grid independence and take a back seat, and are happy to wait longer to see return on investment? Then batteries could be right for you, bank the power for later when you need it.
If you want to manage and take control of your power usage, and want to see a quicker return on investment? Then a solar panel system without batteries, but a strong user app interface may be your calling.
Unsure where you sit, but want to know more?
